Electrolytes & POTS — your common questions, answered simply.
These answers are general education, not personalised advice. Your situation may be different, especially if you have other conditions or take certain medications.
Common questions about electrolytes and POTS.
Can I just use table salt in water?
Some people do, but many find it harsh on the stomach or hard to drink enough. Electrolyte mixes can be easier to sip, with flavours and other minerals included.
Is more sodium always better?
No. There is a useful range and a “too much” range. Going past your safe range can increase health risks without extra symptom benefit. That’s why monitoring matters.
Do I have to give up caffeine?
Not always. Some people tolerate a little, others don’t. It’s reasonable to test with your clinician’s guidance, but avoid high-caffeine energy drinks by default.
Is this website linked to SALTD?
Electrolytes for POTS is primarily an educational site. SALTD — a high-sodium electrolyte mix designed with chronic illness needs in mind — is mentioned as an example, not a personal recommendation.
Can I change my medications when I change sodium?
No. Never alter medications or doses without medical supervision. Sodium changes can interact with blood pressure meds, diuretics, and others.
What if my doctor dismisses POTS or salt?
Sadly, this still happens. You’re allowed to ask for a second opinion or referral to someone with more dysautonomia experience. Bringing clear notes and questions can help.
